Indian national shot dead in New York after altercation; police seek suspect
A 27-year-old Indian national was fatally shot in New York City on Friday night following an altercation, prompting grief and demands for a thorough investigation from the diaspora community.
The victim, identified as Gurdeep Singh, a resident of the Queens borough, was shot around 10 p.m. (local time) on August 21, 2026, near Stanley Avenue in the East New York neighbourhood of Brooklyn, according to a CBS News report.
Police responding to the scene found Singh with a gunshot wound to the chest. Paramedics rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The suspect fled the area before authorities arrived.
A surveillance video obtained by CBS News shows two people engaged in a physical fight on the street. A flash of light, believed to be from a gunshot, is seen, after which one person collapses to the ground. The other individual gets into a car and drives away, the report said.
The New York Police Department searched the neighbourhood for evidence until Saturday morning. No arrests have been made thus far, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The killing has left local residents shaken. Anthony Santos, who works near the crime scene, told CBS News that the incident left him both “shocked” and “afraid”.
The U.S.-based North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) expressed grief and concern on Sunday over Singh’s death. Singh, who moved to the United States more than a decade ago, was a member of the Punjabi community in Queens.
NAPA executive director Satnam Singh Chahal said the incident should not be treated as an isolated one, stressing the broader impact of such violence on families and communities.
“Every time a young Punjabi or Sikh person is killed, a family is destroyed. We cannot allow repeated violence to become something the community simply learns to live with,” Mr. Chahal said.
NAPA urged investigators to establish the exact motive behind the killing and cautioned against drawing conclusions before the probe is completed. The organisation has called for a comprehensive investigation to ensure justice for Singh and his family.
The tragedy has renewed conversations about the safety of Indian and South Asian communities abroad, as well as the need for greater awareness and preventive measures against random street violence. Community leaders have also emphasised the importance of supporting families affected by such incidents.
As the investigation continues, authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and gathering witness statements. They have not yet released a description of the suspect or a possible motive. Singh’s family, believed to be in India, has been notified of his death, according to reports.
The incident comes amid growing concerns among Indian diaspora groups about the frequency of violent attacks on community members in the United States. While each case has its own circumstances, advocates say the pattern warrants attention and proactive measures to ensure safety.
