Aid Delivery to West Bank Families Amid Settler Siege Hits Obstacles

Activists attempting to deliver supplies to Palestinian families in the occupied West Bank have encountered obstacles amid a prolonged standoff. The families, residing in the village of Qusra, have been trapped in their homes since Sunday, with their electricity and water cut off, according to residents.

A group of activists managed to leave water and food near one of the houses, where two Palestinian families – the Abu Ridi and Hassan families – have been confined. However, two residents told the BBC that Israeli forces prevented the activists from handing over the aid directly, forcing them to leave the supplies outside. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) denied this account, stating that civilians were not barred from transferring aid to the homes.

In a separate development on Friday, a number of Israeli settlers returned to set up a tent near the site, a day after an operation to disperse them from the area. The IDF said soldiers later removed the tent, while protecting local residents. The military described the settlers' actions as 'deplorable' and 'unacceptable', adding that an investigation would be conducted and those responsible arrested.

The IDF said Qusra had been declared a 'closed military zone', which prevented Israeli civilians, including some activists, from entering the area. It maintained that aid transfer itself was not hindered. The military also said it was using some vacated Palestinian houses as barracks during the operation, a decision that Qusra's mayor, Abdul Azim Wadi, has criticised.

The situation highlights the ongoing tensions in the region, where settler activity and military operations frequently affect Palestinian communities. The Israeli military stated its aim was 'to protect the residents' and that soldiers had been instructed to ensure Qusra residents remain in their homes.

This incident is part of a broader pattern of friction in the West Bank, where international law considers Israeli settlements illegal, though Israel disputes this. The humanitarian impact on Palestinian families, who face restricted movement and access to basic services, remains a point of concern for rights groups.
