Young Humpback Whale Dies on Mumbai's Carter Road Despite Rescue Efforts

A baby humpback whale was found stranded on the rocky shores of Mumbai's Carter Road early Saturday morning near Otters Club, where the Bandra-Versova Sea Link project is underway. The 26-foot-long calf was initially alive and seen moving, but later died despite rescue attempts.

Labourers working on the sea link project spotted the whale around 6 am and alerted authorities. Teams from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Mumbai Fire Brigade, and the forest department’s Mangrove North Konkan Cell arrived at the scene. After retrieval, doctors examined the whale and declared it dead.

Whale strandings are rare in Mumbai's coastal waters. The cause of death is under investigation. Officials from the forest department will conduct a post-mortem to determine the exact reasons.
