Wisdom over information: Sashi Kumar redefines education in digital age
Education must focus on acquiring wisdom rather than just knowledge or information, said Sashi Kumar, chairman of the Asian College of Journalism, at the Diamond Jubilee Valedictory event at Asan Senior Secondary School in Chennai on Saturday.
Speaking at the release of the Asan Coffee Table Book, Kumar emphasised that wisdom enables individuals to adapt their personality and mental abilities to understand evolving contexts and perspectives in a fast-changing world. He described this capacity to cope with change as a major challenge for humanity.
Commenting on the digital landscape, Kumar noted that social media, while a space for everyone to interact, is rife with disinformation and misinformation. He called it a dangerous environment for young, vulnerable minds and pointed out that several countries have already decided to restrict social media access for children below 16 years of age, calling for serious thought on the issue.
Shyamala Jayaprakash, general secretary of the Asan Memorial Association, highlighted the school's integration of vocational education alongside traditional schooling. She said practical skills are as essential as exams and debates, and that the aim is to prepare students for life, livelihood, and responsibility. The coffee table book released at the event chronicles 60 years of the institution.
President of the association C.K. Revi and other members also spoke. Alumni, teachers, and students attended the event.
