Kerala HC summons SIT chief in SNDP microfinance scam case
The Kerala High Court has directed S. Sasidharan, the head of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) microfinance scam, to appear before it on August 14. The order was issued by Justice A. Badharudeen, who expressed grave dissatisfaction over the progress report submitted by the investigating agency.
The SIT, which is investigating 124 cases related to the scam, had filed a report stating that final reports had been submitted in 17 cases and that no irregularities were found in 30 others. However, the court observed that despite the SIT having sought a month's extension and assuring that the probe would be completed by August 10, only a progress report was filed.
The case pertains to an alleged microfinance scam involving ₹15.85 crore, with Vellapally Natesan, general secretary of the SNDP Yogam, being a key figure. The SNDP Yogam is a prominent social and religious organization in Kerala, and the allegations have drawn significant public attention.
Justice Badharudeen's decision to summon the SIT head personally underscores the court's concern over the pace and thoroughness of the investigation. The court had earlier granted the SIT additional time, expecting the probe to be concluded within a specified period. The failure to meet that deadline has now led to the directive for the officer's personal appearance.
The SIT's progress report indicated that a substantial number of cases remain unresolved. While 17 cases have seen final reports — which generally means chargesheets have been filed or the investigation concluded — 30 cases were closed for lack of evidence. This leaves 77 cases still under active investigation.
