Utah wildfire blocks rescue of helicopter crash site; fresh blazes hit US West

A fast-spreading wildfire in Utah has prevented emergency crews from reaching the remote crash site of a heavy-lift helicopter, with officials saying the area is now engulfed by flames. The incident is one of several major fires burning across the western United States, including a new blaze that has forced the partial closure of Mount Rainier National Park in Washington state.

The Sikorsky Skycrane helicopter went down on Friday morning in Utah's Fishlake National Forest. The crash ignited a new fire that soon merged with an existing wildfire, which has now scorched nearly 451 square kilometres. On Saturday afternoon, the fire incident management team said the crash site had been overtaken by the fire perimeter.

“The site is now inside the fire perimeter itself,” the team said in a statement, explaining why responders had not been able to reach the location. Officials said they decided not to put additional lives at risk until the fire is brought under better control. As a result, they have not been able to confirm the condition of the two people aboard the helicopter.

The National Interagency Fire Centre has said the pilot and crewmember were fatally injured in the crash, but it did not immediately respond to questions about the source of that information. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead an investigation once its team can safely examine the wreckage. Officials urged the public not to speculate or spread rumours about the cause at this early stage, noting that a full determination could take a year or more.

In Washington state, the National Park Service closed access to the Sunrise and White River areas of Mount Rainier National Park on Saturday after a new wildfire burned less than a square kilometre. Firefighters were working to gain control of that fire, which is in rugged terrain and poses a threat to visitors and park infrastructure.

Meanwhile, larger fires near the city of Spokane in eastern Washington have now burned more than 40 square kilometres. Fire crews have constructed over 120 kilometres of containment lines to help control those flames, but dry and windy conditions continue to challenge efforts.

The spate of wildfires across the West comes amid a prolonged drought and heatwave that has left vegetation extremely dry. Fire officials have warned that the coming weeks could bring more blazes, straining resources and putting communities at risk. Climate scientists have noted that such extreme fire seasons are becoming more frequent and intense, though individual fires cannot be directly attributed to climate change without detailed analysis.

For now, the immediate priority for firefighters is to stabilise the Utah blaze so that recovery teams can reach the helicopter crash site and determine what happened. The NTSB has said it will work methodically to piece together the evidence, but it may be a while before answers emerge.
