UP Police Detain Wrong Man in Name Mix-Up, Family Alleges Assault; Probe Ordered
In Uttar Pradesh's Hamirpur district, a case of mistaken identity led to the wrongful detention of a 29-year-old man named Shivraj Singh on Saturday. Police officers, acting on a non-bailable warrant for another individual sharing the same first name, picked up Singh from his home. The family alleges that Singh was assaulted while in custody, an accusation that the Hamirpur Police has denied.
Singh's mother told the media that three policemen came to their home and forcibly took her son away. In videos circulated online, the family claims Singh was physically assaulted at the police station and sustained serious injuries before the police realised they had detained the wrong person.
Hamirpur Police officials have denied the assault allegations, stating that an inquiry has been ordered to investigate the matter. According to the police, the mix-up occurred because Singh lived in the same area as the actual suspect, also named Shivraj, who was wanted in a criminal case.
The incident highlights issues of procedural diligence and accountability within law enforcement. The local administration has assured that the inquiry will be conducted impartially and that action will be taken if any wrongdoing is found.
This case comes amid ongoing discussions about police conduct and the need for safeguards to prevent such errors, which can cause undue hardship to innocent individuals.
