Preacher gets four death sentences for sexually assaulting minor girls
A special court in Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, has awarded four death sentences to a 50-year-old preacher for sexually assaulting four minor girls in 2022. The verdict was delivered on Thursday by the Special Court for Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act cases.
The convicted individual, identified as S. Abraham, ran a prayer hall at Mela Ilanthaikulam near Thevarkulam. According to the prosecution, Abraham sexually assaulted the girls under the pretext of conducting moral classes during summer vacation. The victims later narrated their ordeal to their parents, who lodged complaints with the Tirunelveli Rural All Women Police. Abraham was arrested on July 5, 2022.
POCSO Special Court Magistrate Suresh Kumar sentenced Abraham to death in four separate cases, imposing a fine of ₹52,000. The court also directed the Tamil Nadu government to pay compensation of ₹10 lakh to each of the four victims.
The POCSO Act was enacted in 2012 to protect children from offences such as sexual assault, sexual harassment, and pornography, and to establish special courts for speedy trials. Death sentences in such cases arerare and are reserved for the most aggravated instances of child sexual abuse, as prescribed under the law.
District Superintendent of Police Vishwesh Balasubramanian Shastri praised the investigators, stating that their commendable work ensured the accused was convicted and sentenced to capital punishment. He also revealed that 17 persons have been convicted so far this year in POCSO cases across the district, including two who received death sentences, four who were awarded life imprisonment until death, and one sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Legal experts note that the verdict is subject to appeal in a higher court, and the final confirmation of the death penalty will depend on the appellate process. The case highlights the judicial system's commitment to addressing crimes against children, while also underscoring the need for continued vigilance and strict enforcement of child protection laws.
The court's decision has been welcomed by child rights activists, who see it as a strong deterrent against such offences. However, they also emphasise the importance of providing psychological support and rehabilitation to the victims and their families.
Tamil Nadu has been proactive in setting up dedicated POCSO courts to expedite trials. The Tirunelveli district court has been particularly active in handling such cases, with a focus on delivering justice promptly. The compensation directed by the court is part of the victim assistance scheme under the government's policy to support survivors of sexual violence.
Authorities have urged parents and guardians to remain alert and report any suspicious behaviour to the police. The investigation in this case was carried out by the All Women Police station, and the trial was conducted in camera to protect the identity of the minor victims, as mandated by the POCSO Act.
This case serves as a reminder of the legal protections available to children and the importance of upholding their rights in every circumstance.
