19-Year-Old NEET Aspirant Dies by Suicide in Maharashtra, Note Says 'Will Become Doctor in Next Life'

A 19-year-old medical entrance aspirant died by suicide at his home in Maharashtra's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, prompting renewed concerns over student mental health and exam-related stress.

The deceased, identified as Suraj Subhash Shinde, was found in his house in Khandala village under Vaijapur taluka. Police said preliminary indications suggest he took the extreme step due to immense pressure over his studies and future.

Suraj was preparing for the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET), one of India's most competitive medical exams, in an upstairs room of his residence. Before his death, he left behind a two-line note addressed to his parents.

"Sorry, Mom and Dad... I will definitely become a doctor for you in the next life. Please take care of yourselves and stay happy," the note read.

No suicide note other than this was recovered. Local authorities have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating the circumstances.

The incident comes amid ongoing controversy over NEET-UG. In May, the exam was scrapped following allegations that the question paper had leaked in advance. The development led to widespread student protests, with many demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. However, the minister retained his position.

To address the leak allegations, the Ministry of Education constituted a seven-member committee headed by former ISRO chief K. Radhakrishnan to recommend reforms in the examination process, data security protocols, and the functioning of the National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts NEET-UG.

The government also set up a high-powered task force led by Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani for structural reforms in competitive examinations. The Supreme Court, while hearing related petitions, observed that the NTA should be equipped with necessary infrastructure, manpower, and technological capabilities. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently probing the paper leak case.

Mental health experts have repeatedly stressed the need to provide counseling and support to students preparing for high-stakes entrance exams. Helplines and resources are available for those experiencing distress.

If you or someone you know needs support, contact a mental health professional or call a helpline such as KIRAN (1800-599-0019), a government-run mental health assistance service.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
