Union Minister Joshi unveils green hydrogen certification portal, urges states to actively participate
New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi on Wednesday launched the Green Hydrogen Certification Portal during a national workshop on strengthening the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The portal is designed to enable transparent certification and ensure regulatory compliance under the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme of India.
Speaking at the event, Joshi urged states to actively engage in advancing the mission. He noted that six states have already notified dedicated green hydrogen policies, four are in the process of finalising them, and seven others have integrated hydrogen into their existing industrial and renewable energy policy frameworks. This coordinated effort is intended to create a uniform and supportive ecosystem across the country.
The minister shared updates on domestic manufacturing progress, stating that financial incentives have been awarded to 15 companies to establish 3,000 MW per annum of indigenous electrolyser manufacturing capacity. This step is aimed at reducing dependence on imported supply chains and building a self-reliant green hydrogen industry. Additionally, contracts have been awarded for the supply of 30,000 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green hydrogen to state-run oil refiners, and Rs 84 crore has been sanctioned for pilot projects testing 100% hydrogen injection in the steel sector.
To support the adoption of hydrogen-based mobility, nearly Rs 208 crore has been allocated for 37 hydrogen-fuelled vehicles and nine refuelling stations. Further, an investment of over Rs 193 crore has been made across seven national testing facilities to ensure quality and safety standards. These initiatives are part of the broader mission to scale up green hydrogen production and usage across key sectors.
The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in 2023 with an outlay of Rs 19,744 crore, aims to make India a global hub for the production, utilisation, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives. In line with this goal, agreements have been signed for the supply of 6.7 lakh MTPA of green ammonia to 11 fertiliser plants, marking a significant step towards reducing import dependence and promoting clean energy in agriculture.
Joshi reiterated that the regulatory framework has been streamlined through the launch of the certification scheme and the finalisation of standards for green ammonia and green methanol in recent months. He emphasised the importance of collaboration between the centre and states to achieve the mission's objectives, which include decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors and job creation in the green energy space.
