Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has served under four U.S. presidents, has faced criticism from President Donald Trump as the latter seeks to finalise a deal to end the war with Iran. Trump has publicly used harsh language against Netanyahu, including claiming credit for Israel's existence and calling him 'crazy'. This marks a departure from the typically guarded comments by previous American leaders.
The tensions come amid U.S.-Iran negotiations scheduled to begin on June 19. Trump has been pushing for a deal to address domestic political pressures, including rising gasoline prices and public opposition to the war. Israeli actions in Lebanon have complicated the talks, with Trump criticising recent attacks that threatened to derail the peace process.
Analysts note that Trump is willing to use his leverage over Netanyahu to secure a deal, which he views as a key priority. Aaron David Miller, a former U.S. adviser on West Asia, said, 'If Netanyahu gets in between something Trump really wants, and that’s out of this war, he’s prepared to use the leverage that he has.'
The development highlights the shifting dynamics in U.S.-Israel relations as Trump prioritises ending the conflict with Iran. The talks are expected to span two months, with both sides seeking a resolution to the ongoing hostilities.
