Train hits school van at unmanned crossing in Murshidabad, three dead including children
At least three people, including two minors, died when a train collided with a school van at an unmanned railway level crossing in West Bengal's Murshidabad district on Friday morning. The accident occurred around 7 a.m. near Karna Subarna Railway Station, according to local officials.
The van was attempting to cross the tracks when it was struck by a passing train. The impact killed two children and one adult on the spot. Several others were injured and have been admitted to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, where some are reported to be in critical condition.
Hundreds of local residents gathered at the site to assist in rescue efforts before authorities arrived. A 10-member team from the Indian Railways has reached the spot and is investigating the incident. Official statements from the railway administration and district authorities are awaited.
Unmanned level crossings have been a recurring safety concern in India, with several accidents reported each year. The Railways has been working to eliminate such crossings through engineering measures and awareness campaigns, but progress has been uneven.
This incident highlights the need for enhanced safety measures, especially near schools and during peak commuting hours. The state government has announced an ex gratia payment of ₹2 lakh each to the families of the deceased.
