Nepal Floods: 250 Bodies Await Identification as Temporary Burials Begin

In the aftermath of devastating flash floods in Nepal's Himalayan region, authorities in the south-central district of Chitwan are facing an overwhelming task. As of Saturday, some 250 bodies recovered from the floodwaters were still awaiting identification, while officials had already resorted to temporary burials for about 100 victims, according to local authorities.

The cataclysmic floods and mudslides, which struck on Wednesday, swept dozens of people downstream along the Bhotekoshi River. The bodies were carried hundreds of kilometres from the epicentre of the disaster before being recovered in Chitwan, a district known for its lush forests and wildlife.

The scale of the tragedy became evident as forensic teams struggled to cope with the sheer number of casualties. On Saturday, a convoy of vehicles carrying bodies entered a forested area where an excavator had dug a wide trench in the red earth. Officials and media personnel watched as the temporary burial was carried out, a decision made necessary by the lack of facilities to store and identify the deceased swiftly.

This development has sparked concern among local communities, with some accusing authorities of ignoring Hindu funeral traditions. In Hindu practice, cremation is the preferred method of disposal, and temporary burials are generally considered a last resort. However, officials have defended the decision, citing public health concerns and the need to prevent further distress to families awaiting news of their loved ones.

The floods have caused widespread destruction across several districts, damaging infrastructure, homes, and livelihoods. Reports indicate that many people remain missing, though rescue and relief operations are ongoing.
