Tamil Nadu CM asserts proof of corruption in previous DMK rule, says will reveal when needed

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Wednesday told the Legislative Assembly that his government has evidence of corruption in the previous DMK administration, but he would disclose it at an appropriate time.

Responding to DMK legislators who demanded proof for corruption allegations made by the ruling party, and to a statement by School Education Minister Rajmohan referring to corruption in the previous government, the Chief Minister said he had initially not intended to speak on the matter.

“But they are asking for evidence. One week ago, the Finance Minister said the files relating to the review of three departments were on his table. It was not just a casual remark. Everything is supported by evidence. Do not make me reveal them,” Mr. Vijay said.

The Chief Minister said he was mindful of what to say, how to say it, and when to say it to the people, who had elected his party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), with affection and support.

“It is not as if I should not speak. I can speak. Some good things should happen at least in the bye-elections [to seven seats],” he added.

The statement comes as the Vijay-led government completes its first 100 days, a period that has seen reforms, welfare measures, and governance challenges. The opposition DMK, which was in power for the previous decade, has repeatedly dismissed corruption allegations as politically motivated.

Political observers note that the Chief Minister's remarks are aimed at reinforcing his government's anti-corruption stance while keeping pressure on the opposition. The use of sealed files and the promise of future disclosure are common tactics in Tamil Nadu politics, often used to maintain suspense and political relevance.

The DMK has not yet responded formally to the Chief Minister's latest comments. However, party MLAs had earlier challenged the government to table concrete evidence in the House if it had any.

This development is likely to intensify the war of words between the ruling party and the opposition in the coming days, especially with by-elections pending for seven assembly constituencies.
