Supreme Court Censures AIIMS Acting Director for Dismissive Reply
The Supreme Court on Tuesday pulled up the acting director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, for submitting what it termed a 'casual' response to a legal notice. The bench, comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, expressed strong displeasure over the lack of seriousness in the reply filed by the institute.
The court was hearing a petition related to alleged irregularities in the appointment of a senior faculty member at AIIMS. The acting director's affidavit was criticised for its perfunctory nature, with the judges noting that it failed to address key questions raised by the court. 'This is a very casual reply. You cannot just brush aside the serious allegations,' the bench remarked.
The court directed the acting director to file a fresh, detailed response within two weeks, emphasising the need for accountability and transparency in public institutions. The matter has been listed for further hearing on 15 August 2025.
This is not the first time the top court has taken a stern view of conduct by officials in premier medical institutions. In previous instances, the court has underlined the importance of adhering to procedural fairness and avoiding arbitrary actions.
