22-Year-Old's Death in Bengaluru Lake Sparks Probe into Blackmail Allegations
A 22-year-old woman from Shivamogga district died by suicide in Bengaluru after alleging harassment and blackmail by a youth, police said on Sunday. The incident has prompted an investigation and renewed attention to the pressures faced by young migrants in urban centres.
The deceased has been identified as Vanishree, a native of Arodi near Belalamakki in Sagar taluk. She was living in a paying guest accommodation in HSR Layout's Sector-1 and worked in the sales department of a jewellery store in the area.
According to police, Vanishree left a note accusing a person named Abhishek of blackmailing and harassing her. Her roommate discovered the note on the morning of August 22 and informed Vanishree's sister, Pooja. Pooja and the PG owner then launched a search and alerted the HSR Layout police.
Police, along with family members, searched the vicinity of Agara Lake and recovered Vanishree's body from the water. Based on a complaint filed by Pooja, the HSR Layout police registered a case against Abhishek under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (abatement of suicide).
In her complaint, Pooja alleged that Abhishek had been harassing Vanishree through phone calls, messages, photographs, and videos. Police said the allegations are being investigated and did not confirm any arrests yet.
According to the complaint, Vanishree and Abhishek knew each other from their pre-university course. After finishing her degree in Sagar, Vanishree moved to Bengaluru for employment, a common trajectory for many young people from smaller towns seeking better opportunities.
The case highlights the vulnerability of young professionals to online and offline harassment, and the urgent need for mental health support. Authorities urge anyone facing distress or bullying to seek help from mental health specialists or helplines.
