Sonia Gandhi: India's Silence on Gaza Carries Moral and Strategic Costs
Congress leader Sonia Gandhi on Monday criticised the Narendra Modi government for its silence on the ongoing conflict in Gaza, arguing that this stance has cost India both morally and strategically.
Addressing a party event, Gandhi said, 'Our government's silence on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is not only a moral failure but also a strategic mistake. It undermines India's long-standing principles of supporting the Palestinian cause and our credibility as a voice for the oppressed.'
India has historically advocated for a two-state solution and supported Palestinian statehood, but under the current government, the country has deepened ties with Israel in defence, technology, and trade. Critics argue that this has led to a more muted response to issues like the Gaza conflict.
The government has not officially responded to Gandhi's remarks. However, diplomatic sources indicate that India maintains a balanced approach, calling for de-escalation and a peaceful resolution while respecting all parties' security concerns.
Analysts suggest that the criticism reflects a political divide on foreign policy, with the opposition accusing the government of abandoning traditional positions in favour of closer ties with Israel. The debate highlights the challenge for India in navigating its relationships with both Israel and the Arab world.
