Shiv Sena (UBT) accuses ruling camp of trying to poach MPs with ₹15 crore offers

Mumbai, June 16: Allegations of horse-trading have surfaced in Maharashtra politics, with Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut claiming that seven of his party's MPs are being offered ₹15 crore each to switch sides. In a post on X, Raut said, “The information that Maharashtra MPs will receive an advance of ₹15 crore tonight is extremely shocking and disgusting.” He tagged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in the post.

The claim comes amid rumours that several Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs are planning to quit and join the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. Party chief Uddhav Thackeray held a meeting at his residence Matoshree on Sunday, which was attended by only four MPs, fuelling speculation. However, Raut denied the reports, stating that all MPs are with the party and will attend the 60th foundation day of the undivided Shiv Sena on June 19.

A Congress MLC was also alleged to have offered ₹20 crore to switch loyalties, but the legislator refuted the claim. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena MLC Krupal Tumane from the Shinde camp validated the rumours, saying, “It is in the final stage. Seven MPs and 16 MLAs want to be with the Shiv Sena, and they are in touch with us. Before the Monsoon Session, all will be done.” Shiv Sena Minister Pratap Sarnaik added that the party's doors are open 24x7 for anyone who wants to join.

The Monsoon Session of the Maharashtra Legislature begins on June 22, and Thackeray has called a meeting of MLAs and MLCs on that day. The allegations, if true, raise serious questions about the integrity of democratic processes. Buying and selling of elected representatives undermines the will of the voters and is a violation of constitutional values. Authorities have not yet commented on the matter.
