Shehzad Poonawalla quits BJP, cites financial, personal reasons; to join private sector
Shehzad Poonawalla, a national spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has resigned from all positions and his primary membership of the party. In a letter dated August 17, 2026, addressed to BJP leader Nitin Nabin, he cited “pressing financial and personal circumstances” as the reason for his decision. The letter was shared on Mr. Poonawalla’s official X account.
The letter reveals that Mr. Poonawalla had submitted a resignation on July 30, 2026, which was rejected by the party leadership. He was asked to reconsider, but after further reflection, he said he had arrived at a final decision to go ahead. “But after long and hard contemplation, I have arrived at a final decision that I would like to press for relieving myself from my role as National Spokesperson and primary membership of the BJP,” he wrote.
Mr. Poonawalla stated that he would be moving to the private sector in the wake of his financial and personal circumstances. While he did not elaborate on the specific nature of these circumstances, he made it clear that the decision was not rooted in political differences. He also affirmed his continuing support for the party, saying he would continue to “support the vision and work of Prime Minister Modi and the BJP.”
The letter conspicuously does not mention any dissatisfaction with the party’s functioning, its leadership, or its ideological direction. Instead, the explanation is anchored entirely in his personal situation. This suggests that the resignation is a personal and professional decision rather than a political one. At the same time, he did not disclose the precise nature of the financial and personal circumstances cited. The letter is personal in tone but remains discreet about specific details.
As a national spokesperson, Mr. Poonawalla was a familiar face on television debates and a vocal presence on social media. His job involved representing the party’s views on national issues, countering criticism from opponents, and communicating its policies to the public. He was part of a cohort of spokespersons who shape the party’s public messaging.
The resignation comes after a week of uncertainty. On July 31, Mr. Poonawalla updated his bio on X, deleting all references to the BJP. This led to widespread speculation that he was planning to leave the party. However, no official announcement was made at that time. His letter now confirms what many had suspected.
The timing of events suggests that Mr. Poonawalla had been deliberating on this move for some time. His initial resignation attempt on July 30 was not accepted, and he was asked to reconsider. More than two weeks later, he chose to press ahead with his decision and make it public.
The position of national spokesperson in a major political party is demanding, often requiring constant media appearances, rapid responses to news events, and the ability to argue the party line effectively. Spokespersons in Indian political parties often operate in high-pressure environments, with the expectation of being available for comment on short notice and defending the party's stands in adversarial settings. Mr. Poonawalla performed this role for a considerable period, and his departure is a notable change for the party’s communication team.
The BJP has not yet responded to his resignation. It is not clear whether the party will accept it or attempt to persuade him to withdraw it again. However, by sharing the letter publicly, Mr. Poonawalla has made his stance unequivocal.
His next professional move will be awaited by observers of political communication.
