Rahul Gandhi Slams NTA Over Fresh UGC-NET for Three Subjects, Cites Candidate Distress

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced fresh exams for three subjects of the University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET), a decision that has drawn sharp criticism from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. On Saturday, Gandhi took to social media to attack the government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi directly, asking, “Modi ji, look at what your NTA has done.”

The fresh tests were ordered following reports of irregularities and grievances raised by candidates who appeared for the earlier cycle. While the NTA has cited administrative and technical issues as the reason for rescheduling, the move has added to the growing list of controversies surrounding the examination body, which conducts several high-stakes tests including NEET, JEE, and CTET.

In his post, Gandhi alleged that the repeated disruptions in examinations and the resulting confusion are causing immense stress to lakhs of students across the country. He called for accountability and transparency in the functioning of the NTA, and questioned the government’s handling of the education sector. His remarks echo broader concerns raised by student unions and opposition parties about the reliability of centralised exams.

The UGC-NET is conducted to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for the post of Assistant Professor and for admission to PhD courses. A fresh exam means additional time, preparation, and financial burden for candidates, many of whom have been preparing for months. Some affected students have expressed frustration over the lack of clear communication from the authorities.

This is not the first time the NTA has faced criticism. Last year, several states and candidates complained about errors in question papers, delays in results, and mismanagement during the NEET-UG and UGC-NET examinations. The Ministry of Education has maintained that steps are being taken to improve the system, but the opposition has repeatedly demanded a thorough investigation and reform of the agency.

The Congress leader’s remarks come at a time when the government is already under pressure over rising unemployment and issues related to the education system. While the NTA has yet to issue an official response to his comments, officials earlier stated that the fresh exams would be conducted in a transparent and secure manner, and that the interests of candidates remain a top priority.

As the date for the new tests approaches, students are left waiting for further details. Many hope that the authorities will ensure a smooth process this time. The episode highlights the need for systemic improvements in exam management, and for robust mechanisms to address the concerns of young aspirants who play a crucial role in the nation’s future.
