Delhi AAP seeks L-G intervention for probe into alleged procurement scams
New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Sanjeev Jha has written to Delhi Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu, requesting a meeting and a thorough investigation into alleged irregularities in the procurement of bicycles, medicines, and rice by the city government. The communication was made public on Sunday, August 16, 2026, amid a political tussle between the ruling AAP and the opposition BJP in the Delhi Legislative Assembly.
In a post on X, Mr. Jha stated that he had provided the L-G with detailed information, documents, and other relevant facts concerning what he described as the 'bicycle scam,' 'medicine scam,' and 'rice scam.' He urged the L-G to ensure a fair and comprehensive investigation, stressing the importance of bringing facts to light and taking appropriate action against those found guilty.
'On any serious issue concerning the interests of the people of Delhi, the AAP and the Opposition will fulfil their responsibility with full strength,' Mr. Jha said, indicating that the party intends to pursue the matter at both the administrative and political levels.
According to Mr. Jha's letter, a delegation of all Opposition MLAs, along with AAP state president Saurabh Bharadwaj, wishes to meet the L-G to present the available information and documents. The specific allegations have not been detailed in the public communication, but they relate to government procurement processes under the current administration.
The BJP, which is in opposition in Delhi, dismissed the accusations on August 12, calling them 'baseless.' Party leaders claimed that the AAP was 'rattled by their government's welfare schemes' and was attempting to divert attention from governance issues. No independent verification of the allegations has been made so far.
This development comes amid an ongoing political rivalry in the national capital, where the AAP holds a majority in the Assembly and the BJP controls the central government. The L-G's office, which has often been at the centre of disputes between the elected government and the central administration, has not yet responded to the request for an appointment.
Political observers note that such letters and demands for investigations are common in Delhi's political landscape, often reflecting the fraught Centre-state relations. The AAP has previously accused the L-G of overstepping constitutional limits, while the BJP has accused the AAP of corruption and mismanagement.
The L-G's decision on whether to grant the meeting could set the stage for further political confrontation. If the delegation is allowed, it may lead to a formal inquiry, which could have implications for the Delhi government's procurement policies. However, if the request is declined, the AAP might escalate the matter through other channels.
As the situation unfolds, citizens await clarity on the validity of the allegations and the potential impact on public services. Both parties have urged the other to act in the interests of transparency and good governance.
