NEW DELHI: The focus of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day speeches has undergone a marked transformation since 2014, reflecting the nation's journey from addressing basic necessities to aspiring for global leadership in technology and social reform.

Officials tracking the speeches over the past 12 years note that in his first address from the Red Fort, PM Modi spoke about challenges such as lack of toilets, bank accounts, poverty, and fertiliser shortages. These were pressing issues that required urgent attention. The tone was one of fixing what was broken and reaching those who had been left out.
