Seven injured in panic near Ujjain's Mahakaleshwar Temple; officials say darshan unaffected

At least seven people required medical attention after a stampede-like situation emerged near the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, on Monday (August 17, 2026), as large crowds gathered for the Nag Panchami festivities during the holy month of Sawan. According to initial reports, a rumour about an electric current in the barricades triggered panic among devotees near Harsidhi Square, leading to some barricades toppling over.

Ujjain Collector Roshan Kumar Singh, who reached the spot shortly after the incident, said the situation was brought under control quickly. "Some people who felt uneasy are being given medical care," he told The Hindu. Mr. Singh denied reports of anyone suffering serious injuries, adding that separate arrangements had been made for all prominent temples, including the Mahakaleshwar and Nagchandreshwar temples. "The situation is calm now and the darshans are going on smoothly," he said.

Mahakal Temple Administrator Pratham Kaushik also clarified that no chaos or untoward incident had occurred at the temple premises. "On the occasion of Nag Panchami, darshan at Nag Chandreshwar Mandir at Shri Mahakaleshwar Mandir is continuously going on... So, it is important to clarify that no chaos or any such incident has occurred at the temple. All devotees are having darshan at the temple seamlessly," Mr. Kaushik said.

He added that a massive number of devotees had turned up for the occasion. "Due to Nag Panchami and Sawan Somvar today, more than 6 lakh devotees had darshan of Bhagwan Nag Chandreshwar, and more than 2 lakh devotees had darshan of Lord Shri Mahakaleshwar till 12 noon today. All devotees have been provided with every possible facility by the temple administration," he said.

The Mahakaleshwar Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, draws huge crowds throughout the month of Sawan. On Nag Panchami, the Nagchandreshwar Temple, located on the third floor of the Mahakaleshwar complex, is opened for darshan, attracting thousands of additional pilgrims. Authorities had deployed extra police personnel and barricades to manage the expected rush.

Witnesses described a brief moment of panic when some devotees shouted about a possible electric current in the metal barricades. In the ensuing scramble, several people fell, and a few barricades were pushed over. Police personnel present at the scene quickly intervened, restoring order within minutes.

The injured, including some women and elderly devotees, were taken to a first-aid post set up near the temple. Officials confirmed that all were stable and no one required hospitalisation. "It was a minor incident, not a stampede," a senior police officer said, requesting anonymity. "The crowd was large, but the administration was prepared for such numbers."

Local authorities have urged devotees to cooperate with security personnel and follow crowd management guidelines. Similar incidents have been reported during past festivals when the temple sees an overwhelming turnout. In 2023, a similar panic occurred near the temple during Sawan, prompting the administration to install additional signage and deploy more personnel.

The district administration has said it will review the barricade placement and crowd flow arrangements after the festival to prevent any recurrence. Meanwhile, darshan at the temple continues for devotees, with queues moving steadily under the watch of police and volunteer teams.
