Russia Warns NATO Summit Decisions Could Lead to Global Catastrophe
Russia has condemned the decisions taken at the NATO summit in Turkey on Wednesday, warning that the alliance's actions could have catastrophic consequences for the entire world. The remarks came after NATO announced a substantial military aid package for Ukraine and reaffirmed its commitment to collective defence under Article 5.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that NATO's priorities remain unchanged, focusing on the militarisation of Europe, building up defence capabilities, preparing for armed conflict with Russia, and continuing aid to Ukraine. She expressed regret that NATO strategists did not pause to reconsider, calling their decisions irresponsible and potentially catastrophic not just for the alliance but for the world.
At the summit, NATO members pledged €70 billion (approximately $80 billion) in military assistance to Ukraine for 2026. They also reaffirmed their 'ironclad commitment' to collective defence under Article 5 in a summit declaration and unveiled arms deals worth at least $50 billion.
In her comments, Zakharova highlighted growing tensions between the United States and its NATO partners, saying that 'cracks' have not disappeared. She noted that the Americans do not hide their disappointment with the alliance, citing unresolved issues such as the Greenland situation and a perceived lack of support from other members when the United States needed backing.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, in an interview with Reuters, dismissed the disputes as a sign of the alliance's democratic strength. He suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin should take note and engage in more open discussions himself.
The summit's outcomes underscore the continued rift between Russia and NATO, with both sides accusing each other of escalating tensions. The situation remains fluid, and further developments are expected as both parties respond to the decisions made.
