Record Rains in Maharashtra: 13 Dead, Red Alert Issued for Mumbai and Neighbouring Districts

The Maharashtra Legislative Council was adjourned for the day on Monday (July 6, 2026) as heavy rainfall continued to lash Mumbai and neighbouring areas.

Before the adjournment, Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan informed the House that Mumbai and the adjoining districts of Palghar and Raigad have witnessed record-breaking rainfall over the past few days. He confirmed that 13 persons have lost their lives in rain-related incidents in the last three to four days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'red' alert, forecasting extremely heavy rains over the next two days, Mr. Mahajan added.

On Sunday (July 5), six persons died after a chawl collapsed in Mumbai's Mankhurd area following heavy rains. Two persons died in tree collapse incidents in Mumbai over the last two days. Additionally, an 11-year-old boy was killed when a tree uprooted and fell onto a moving school bus on June 30.

Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors and avoid non-essential travel. Emergency services remain on high alert as the city braces for more downpours.
