Punjab Congress Factions: Over 20 MLAs Back Channi for State Chief Post

Factions within the Punjab Congress party have emerged after more than 20 sitting and former legislators expressed support for former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi to become the state unit chief. This comes despite the party’s central leadership deciding to retain Amrinder Singh Raja Warring in the position.

On Friday, at least six party MLAs, along with several former legislators and senior leaders, gathered at Channi’s residence in Morinda, Rupnagar, in a display of support for the Jalandhar MP. The gathering was seen as a show of strength by Channi's supporters.

The development follows the announcement by the party’s central leadership on Wednesday, which confirmed Warring’s continuation as state unit chief. The announcement was made alongside the unveiling of various party committees for the upcoming 2027 Assembly elections.

This internal rift highlights ongoing disagreements within the Punjab Congress over leadership and organizational direction. The party has not yet issued an official statement regarding the factional display.
