Trump cites India's voter ID system to push SAVE America Act

US President Donald Trump has invoked India's electoral system to press for the passage of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act, a bill that would require Americans to present proof of citizenship to register to vote and impose a nationwide voter identification requirement.

In a post on Truth Social on Monday, August 17, 2026, Mr. Trump said India's Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, had questioned how US elections could be held without a valid photo ID during an interaction with his administration earlier this month. Mr. Trump noted that India's last general election saw 646 million voters, with less than one per cent using postal ballots.

"India's last Election had 646,000,000 Voters! Less than one per cent voted by mail, and every single Voter had to have a VALID Photo Identity Document," Mr. Trump wrote. "We need to pass THE SAVE AMERICA ACT, now."

The SAVE Act, introduced this year, seeks to amend the National Voter Registration Act to require documentary proof of citizenship for voter registration. It also aims to limit mail-in voting and mandate in-person voting with photo identification.

A fact sheet on the White House website notes that countries like India and Brazil have linked voter identity cards to biometric databases, whereas the US relies on self-attestation by electors. The fact sheet argues that the SAVE Act would align the US with international standards.

However, the bill has encountered opposition. The US Senate adjourned for a five-week recess earlier this month without taking concrete steps toward its passage. Critics argue that the legislation could disenfranchise eligible voters, particularly minorities, elderly citizens, and those without easy access to documentation.

The bill also includes provisions unrelated to election integrity, such as a permanent ban on transgender individuals competing in women's sports and prohibiting gender-affirming surgeries for minors. These measures have further deepened the partisan divide.

Supporters of the bill argue that it is necessary to protect the integrity of US elections, pointing to concerns about non-citizen voting, though such instances are rare and often unintentional. Opponents counter that existing laws already prohibit non-citizens from voting and that the bill's requirements are overly burdensome.

The Indian election system, which manages the world's largest electorate, has been a point of reference for election experts. India's Election Commission issues voter ID cards to all eligible citizens and uses electronic voting machines. While the Indian system has its own challenges, including allegations of electoral roll inaccuracies, it is often highlighted for its scale and logistical efficiency.

The SAVE Act's future remains uncertain as Congress reconvenes. Proponents have called for immediate action, while detractors argue for a more measured approach that ensures accessibility alongside security.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
