Odisha Floods: 7.85 Lakh Affected in Six Districts, CM Reviews Rescue Efforts
The flood situation in northern Odisha worsened on Monday, August 17, 2026, with approximately 7.85 lakh people affected across six districts owing to heavy rainfall in three major river systems. The districts of Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Kendrapara and Keonjhar have been hit by floodwaters following high Average Areal Precipitation (AAP) in the region.
According to official data, the Burhabalang river basin recorded an AAP of 77.6 mm, the Baitarani river basin 47.9 mm, and the Subarnarekha river basin 36 mm. The flooding has disrupted normal life, with roads and low-lying areas inundated, affecting transport and daily activities.
Odisha has received 28% excess rainfall between June 1 and August 17, 2026. The state recorded 972.9 mm of rain during this period, compared to the average of 760 mm. The excess precipitation has contributed to the swelling of rivers and subsequent flooding.
As a precautionary measure, schools were closed in Balasore, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts. Utkal University also postponed undergraduate semester examinations scheduled for Monday due to disruption in transportation caused by the floods.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, accompanied by Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari, visited Jajpur district to assess the situation. Mr. Majhi directed officials to accelerate rescue and rehabilitation efforts, ensuring that affected communities receive timely assistance.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, with disaster response teams deployed in the affected areas. The state government has urged residents to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines as the flood waters recede gradually.
