Promoted IPS Officer Faces High Court Case Over Surat Demolitions

In a recent development, six police officers from Gujarat have been promoted to the Indian Police Service (IPS). Among them is Rajdeepsinh Nakum, currently serving as Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Special Operations Group (SOG) in Surat. Nakum is one of the respondents in a petition filed in the Gujarat High Court by residents displaced after the demolition of shanties in Surat's Nasir Nagar on May 30.

The petition, filed by 26 residents, alleges that SOG personnel were present during the demolitions. Along with Nakum, three other police officers—including Ahmedabad's new police chief Anupam Singh Gahlaut—have also been named as respondents. The promotions were announced on Thursday, bringing these officers into the elite IPS cadre.

The case highlights the ongoing legal scrutiny of the demolitions, which left many families homeless. The court is yet to deliver a verdict on the matter. The promotions have sparked discussions about accountability and the timing of such appointments amid active litigation.
