Prashant Kishor to Contest Bankipore Bypoll: Jan Suraaj Party Makes Announcement

Patna, July 5, 2026 – The Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) has officially declared that its founder and chief strategist, Prashant Kishor, will contest the upcoming by-election for the Bankipore Assembly constituency. The decision was taken unanimously by the party's core committee, according to JSP state president Manoj Bharti, who addressed the media at a press conference in Patna on Sunday.

The Bankipore seat became vacant after the sitting legislator, Nitin Nabin of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was elected to the Rajya Sabha. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced that the notification for the bypoll will be issued on July 6. Candidates can file nominations until July 13, with the scrutiny of papers scheduled for July 14. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is July 16. Polling is set for July 30, and the counting of votes will take place on August 3.

Prashant Kishor, a well-known political strategist who has advised several national and regional parties, launched the Jan Suraaj Party in May 2026 with the aim of providing an alternative political force in Bihar. The party has positioned itself as a centrist, pro-development outfit, focusing on issues such as employment, education, and healthcare. Kishor's decision to contest an election for the first time marks a significant shift in his career from political consultancy to active politics.

Bankipore, located in the Patna district, has been a stronghold of the BJP since the 1990s. The constituency has a diverse electorate comprising urban and semi-urban voters. In the 2025 Bihar assembly elections, the BJP's Nitin Nabin won the seat with a margin of over 15,000 votes. Political analysts view this bypoll as a crucial test for the Jan Suraaj Party's electoral viability, given that it is the first election the party is contesting after its formation.

Responding to the announcement, BJP leaders expressed confidence that the party would retain the seat. A senior BJP functionary stated, "Our party has a strong organizational base and a track record of development in Bankipore. We are prepared to face any candidate." The BJP has yet to announce its candidate for the bypoll.

The election will also be watched keenly by other political parties in Bihar, including the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Janata Dal (United) – both major players in the state's political landscape. The RJD, which leads the opposition Mahagathbandhan alliance, has not yet declared its candidate for the Bankipore seat. JD(U), a former ally of the BJP, has also remained silent on the matter.

With the announcement of Kishor's candidature, the bypoll has gained national attention. Observers say the outcome could influence the political dynamics in Bihar ahead of the 2025 Lok Sabha elections. Campaigning is expected to intensify in the coming days, with Kishor likely to focus on governance and anti-incumbency issues.

The Jan Suraaj Party has urged voters to support its candidate, promising a new era of transparent and accountable politics. The party's manifesto for the bypoll is expected to include specific promises related to local infrastructure, water supply, and sanitation.

As the formal process begins, all eyes are on Bankipore, which could set the tone for the Jan Suraaj Party's political journey.
