Power Ministry Prepares Advisory as El Niño Threatens Energy Supply

The Ministry of Power is expected to issue a detailed advisory to stakeholders across the power sector, outlining measures to mitigate the impact of erratic weather conditions due to the effects of El Niño. This move comes after a review meeting held on Thursday, where the ministry discussed contingency steps to be taken in the event of adverse weather, particularly if hydropower and wind generation are affected.

The meeting was attended by the Power Secretary, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) Chairperson, representatives of State Load Despatch Centres (SLDCs), state governments, and transmission sector stakeholders, among others. The discussions focused on ensuring grid stability and adequate power supply during potential weather disruptions.

This initiative follows a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on Tuesday, which took stock of the possible impact of El Niño on various sectors. The PMO directed that the overall situation be continuously monitored and that the impact of the monsoon or delayed monsoon on vulnerable districts be assessed in coordination with states, enabling timely remedial action.

El Niño is a climate pattern characterized by the warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, which can lead to altered weather patterns globally, including droughts or heavy rainfall in different regions. In India, El Niño is often associated with weaker monsoon rains, which can affect agriculture and water availability, and consequently power generation from hydroelectric plants.

The Power Ministry's advisory is expected to include recommendations for maintaining fuel stocks, optimizing thermal power generation, and enhancing coordination among regional grids. Officials indicated that states have been asked to prepare action plans to handle potential shortfalls in power supply.

The advisory is part of the government's broader effort to ensure energy security amid climate variability. The ministry will continue to monitor weather forecasts and update guidelines as necessary.
