Police Remove Activist Sonam Wangchuk from Jantar Mantar as Health Worsens During Hunger Strike

Educator and activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on a hunger strike over alleged irregularities in the NEET exam, was removed from the protest site at Delhi's Jantar Mantar early on July 18. Police shifted him to a hospital, citing the need for essential medical care, and urged other protesters to vacate the area.

Wangchuk began his hunger strike on June 28, demanding accountability in education and addressing issues related to Ladakh. The protest, initially small, grew over weeks, drawing hundreds of supporters, mostly students. He and his supporters aimed to draw attention to the plight of students aspiring to enter India's top medical colleges, targeting Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

On July 16, the Delhi High Court ordered the government to take all necessary steps to protect Wangchuk's life. Doctors had earlier described his condition as an emergency, warning of potential organ failure. Wangchuk had lost over 8 kg by July 15, and his blood glucose levels had dropped significantly.

Despite his deteriorating health, Wangchuk vowed on July 17 to continue his fast until Parliament's Monsoon Session began, planning a peaceful march to Parliament. However, early on July 18, police intervened, moving him to a hospital and clearing the protest site.

The action came a day after doctors expressed serious concerns about his health. Wangchuk's hunger strike had drawn support from various political and social figures, but the police maintained that the removal was for his safety and medical care.
