PM Modi Outlines Five Pledges for Amarnath Pilgrims as Second Group Departs Jammu
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday listed five 'sankalps' (pledges) for pilgrims undertaking the Amarnath Yatra, as the second batch of devotees left Jammu for the cave shrine in Kashmir. The Prime Minister's remarks came during a video conference with the yatris, emphasizing the spiritual and national significance of the pilgrimage.
The five pledges, as outlined by PM Modi, are: (1) Maintain cleanliness at all pilgrimage sites and along the route, contributing to the Swachh Bharat Mission; (2) Respect nature and avoid littering in the fragile Himalayan ecosystem; (3) Ensure the safety and well-being of fellow pilgrims, especially the elderly and infirm; (4) Uphold the spirit of unity and brotherhood, transcending regional and communal differences; and (5) Observe discipline during the yatra, following guidelines issued by the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board and local authorities.
The Prime Minister stated that these pledges are not merely personal resolutions but a collective commitment to strengthen the nation's cultural heritage and social fabric. He urged pilgrims to act as ambassadors of India's ancient traditions and modern values.
The second batch of over 4,500 pilgrims left Jammu in a convoy of 153 vehicles, escorted by security forces. The yatra, which began on July 1, is expected to conclude on August 31, coinciding with Raksha Bandhan. Officials said that strict security arrangements have been put in place, including multi-tiered deployment of police, paramilitary, and army personnel along the 48-kilometre route from Baltal and the traditional 14-kilometre path from Pahalgam.
The Shri Amarnath Shrine Board has made extensive arrangements for medical facilities, accommodation, and food for the pilgrims. This year, the yatra is being conducted with enhanced safety protocols in view of the terrain and weather conditions.
The Prime Minister's call for 'sankalps' has been welcomed by religious leaders and yatris alike, who see it as a way to blend devotion with civic responsibility.
