PM Modi Embarks on Three-Nation Tour to Strengthen Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific Ties
Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed on Monday for a six-day visit to Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand, aimed at deepening bilateral ties and reinforcing India's Act East Policy and vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific. The tour, running from July 6 to July 11, comes at the invitation of the respective leaders of the three nations.
In his departure statement, Modi highlighted that the visit would strengthen India's Act East Policy, the MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across the Regions) vision, and the country's commitment to a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific. He noted that the trip builds on strong momentum in bilateral relations with all three countries.
The first leg will take Modi to Indonesia, where he will be hosted by President Prabowo Subianto from July 6 to 8. India and Indonesia upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018, and this marks Modi's first bilateral visit since that elevation. President Prabowo visited India as the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations in January 2025. Modi said his discussions would focus on deepening the multifaceted partnership, including civilisational and people-to-people ties. He is also scheduled to interact with the Indian diaspora and visit the Prambanan Temple complex in Yogyakarta alongside President Prabowo, underscoring the cultural links between the two countries.
From Indonesia, Modi will travel to Melbourne, Australia, at the invitation of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The visit aims to strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with discussions expected on defence, security, trade, investments, education, mobility, and people-to-people ties. Modi noted that the Indian diaspora in Australia is a vital pillar of the strategic partnership. The agenda also includes cooperation in emerging and critical technologies, sports, and sports science.
The final stop is Auckland, New Zealand, at the invitation of Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. Modi said the visit will build on the momentum from Luxon's trip to India in March 2025. Key areas of discussion include enhancing economic, trade, and commercial engagements. Both countries have committed to strengthening bilateral trade, with the signing of a Free Trade Agreement. Modi also plans to address the Indian community in New Zealand, acknowledging their contributions across various fields.
The visit underscores India's proactive diplomatic outreach in the Indo-Pacific region, aligning with its broader strategic objectives.
