Suspicious Movement in Kathua Triggers Search Operation in J&K Border Belt
Security forces launched a search operation in the forested areas of Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district on Thursday (August 20, 2026) following reports of suspicious movement, officials said. The operation was initiated in the Billawar forest region near the Udhampur-Kathua border, an area known for its dense vegetation and proximity to the international border with Pakistan.
According to local residents, unidentified persons allegedly knocked on the door of a house in a village in the Billawar belt late on Wednesday night. The family, fearing unknown visitors at that hour, did not open the door. The next morning, they discovered that food stored in their home had gone missing, leading to suspicions that someone had entered the premises during the night.
Kathua Superintendent of Police (Operations), Pritpal Singh, confirmed that the search operation was underway. He described it as a routine measure to maintain vigilance in the border area. “To maintain alertness, these routine operations are carried out. Regarding the suspicious activity reported, yes, this is a bordering area, so keeping that in mind, we are carrying out this operation,” Mr. Singh said.
Kathua district, located in the foothills of the Himalayas, shares a porous border with Pakistan's Punjab province and is also adjacent to the Handwara sector of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The region has historically witnessed infiltration attempts and cross-border smuggling, prompting security agencies to conduct periodic grid searches and intelligence-based operations in the area.
While police have not confirmed any specific threat, the incident has revived attention on the security situation in the Jammu region. Over the past year, security forces have intensified counter-infiltration operations along the International Border and the Line of Control, especially in the Belwar hills and other forested tracts that are difficult to patrol.
Local villagers have expressed a mix of anxiety and resilience. “We are used to such incidents. The army and police are always on alert. But when something happens near our homes, we feel uneasy,” said a resident of the village, who did not wish to be identified. He added that families in the area have been advised to report any unusual activity to security forces without delay.
Meanwhile, additional units of the Rashtriya Rifles and the Central Reserve Police Force have been deployed to assist the local police in the search operation. The teams are conducting thorough checks of thickets, caves, and abandoned structures, according to an official familiar with the operation. The official, who requested anonymity, said that the search would continue till the area is declared clear.
In recent years, the security grid in Jammu and Kashmir has been bolstered with improved surveillance, including drone monitoring and ground sensors along the border. However, mountainous terrain and dense forests often make it difficult to detect small groups of infiltrators. The operation in Kathua is part of a broader strategy to deny any space to militants trying to cross over.
No arrests have been made so far, and the police have urged the public not to spread rumours. Further details are awaited as the operation progresses.
