PM Modi Embarks on Six-Day Indo-Pacific Tour: Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will commence a six-day visit to Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand on Monday, marking a significant diplomatic push to strengthen India's engagement in the Indo-Pacific region.

The trip, which runs from [start date] to [end date], aims to deepen cooperation in defence, trade, technology, and maritime security with three key partners. It includes bilateral talks with leaders, interactions with business communities, and meetings with the Indian diaspora.

Indonesia: 75 Years of Diplomatic Ties

The first leg of the tour takes PM Modi to Indonesia, where he will hold bilateral discussions with President Prabowo Subianto. This visit coincides with the 75th anniversary of India-Indonesia diplomatic relations and is expected to bolster the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations.

Discussions will cover maritime security, defence, digital technologies, health, education, space, connectivity, trade, and investment. Both countries, as major maritime powers along key sea routes, have been enhancing cooperation on regional security and Indo-Pacific issues. PM Modi’s last visit to Jakarta was in 2023 for ASEAN summits; his previous bilateral visit in 2018 elevated ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Australia: Trade, Security, and Critical Minerals

The second leg will see PM Modi in Australia for the Annual Leaders' Summit with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The agenda includes defence cooperation, maritime security, critical minerals, clean energy, emerging technologies, education, and skilled mobility. Negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) are expected to advance trade and investment ties.

PM Modi will also meet Australian business leaders and the Indian diaspora. In recent years, India and Australia have strengthened strategic cooperation through the Quad, joint military exercises, and economic engagement. PM Modi's last bilateral visit to Australia was in 2023, when he addressed a large Indian diaspora event.

Historic Visit to New Zealand

The final leg is a historic visit to New Zealand, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in over four decades. PM Modi will meet Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to discuss cooperation in trade, agriculture, education, technology, renewable energy, sports, and investment. The visit also highlights the growing importance of the Indian community in New Zealand, one of the country's fastest-growing ethnic groups.

Both leaders will review bilateral progress and explore avenues for deeper economic and strategic collaboration.

Significance of the Tour

This three-nation visit underscores India's increasing focus on the Indo-Pacific, where maritime security, resilient supply chains, and strategic partnerships are becoming central to regional stability. By engaging with Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand, India aims to bolster its role as a key player in the region while advancing mutual interests in trade, technology, and security.
