Opposition Criticises Removal of Activist Wangchuk from Jantar Mantar
New Delhi: The removal of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk from a protest site at Jantar Mantar on Tuesday sparked criticism from opposition leaders, who accused the government of using excessive force. Wangchuk, a well-known environmental campaigner from Ladakh, had been staging a demonstration demanding action on climate change and protection of Himalayan ecosystems.
Police officials said the removal was necessary as the protest lacked proper permissions and was causing disruption. However, opposition leaders expressed strong disapproval. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge described the action as 'heavy-handed' and called for an explanation. Other opposition figures used sharp language, with some referring to the officers involved as 'goons'.
The government has yet to issue an official response to the criticism. The incident has reignited debates about the right to peaceful protest in India. Legal experts note that while police have the authority to manage public spaces, the use of force must be proportionate and justified.
Wangchuk, who gained prominence for his innovative ice stupa project to address water scarcity in Ladakh, has not commented on the removal. His supporters plan to continue their protest through legal channels.
