Palakkad council sees walkout as BJP insists on full Vande Mataram; LDF stays for first two stanzas

Palakkad, August 31, 2026: The special council meeting of the Palakkad municipality on Monday was marked by a political confrontation over the rendition of the national song, Vande Mataram, with United Democratic Front (UDF) councillors walking out and Left Democratic Front (LDF) councillors choosing to remain only for the first two stanzas.

The walkout occurred before the council proceedings began, when BJP councillors began singing the complete version of Vande Mataram. According to the UDF councillors, their decision to abstain was a pre-meditated response to the BJP's insistence on singing the song in its entirety. They maintained that the traditional practice at municipal council meetings has been to recite only the first two stanzas of the song.

After signing the attendance register, the UDF members left the council hall. LDF councillors, while also not singing the full song, returned to their seats after the first two stanzas were rendered. The BJP councillors, however, continued with the complete rendition, after which the scheduled business of the meeting was taken up.

The incident reflects a recurring dispute over the manner in which Vande Mataram is presented at official functions. The song, written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, holds a significant place in India's freedom movement, and its first two stanzas are often treated as the standard recitation in many formal settings. However, some political groups, particularly the BJP, have advocated for the full version to be sung as a mark of national respect.

The UDF councillors expressed that the front collectively decided against participating in the full rendition, stating that their action was in protest against the BJP's unilateral move to alter the established practice. They said the matter should be resolved through discussion and maintained that their objection was not to the song itself but to what they described as the BJP's insistence on a particular format.

The LDF councillors, while not walking out, made clear through their action that they too were not in favour of singing beyond the first two stanzas. Neither the UDF nor the LDF made any statement suggesting disrespect toward the national song.

In response, the BJP councillors accused both the UDF and LDF of disrespecting Vande Mataram and announced that they would take legal action against those who walked out or refused to sing the full version. The party said it would pursue the matter through the appropriate legal channels.

The council is expected to take up the issue at its next meeting, with members likely to discuss the differing positions on the rendition of Vande Mataram. This development underscores the deeper political polarisation in the state, where symbols of nationalism have often become points of contention between parties.

Observers note that while the singing of Vande Mataram is a common practice at official events, there is no uniform rule mandating the number of stanzas to be sung at municipal council meetings. The incident in Palakkad highlights how such symbolic gestures can become triggers for political confrontation, drawing attention away from routine municipal business.

As the matter moves forward, the council's ability to address the issue calmly and in accordance with established norms will be tested. The walkout, and the subsequent reactions, have set the tone for what could become a recurring point of friction in local governance in Kerala.
