Omar Abdullah Advocates India-Pak Talks, Notes RSS Support for Dialogue
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has called for renewed dialogue between India and Pakistan, stating that it remains the only viable path to de-escalate tensions between the two neighbours. Speaking to the media, Abdullah questioned why politicians from Jammu and Kashmir face criticism for advocating talks, while leaders from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) have made similar calls without backlash.
Abdullah emphasised the importance of improving bilateral relations, recalling former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's vision of peaceful coexistence. He noted that even the RSS, widely regarded as the ideological parent of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has favoured dialogue, suggesting a broader consensus on the issue.
The Chief Minister's remarks come amid ongoing tensions along the Line of Control and a stalemate in official diplomatic channels. While India has maintained that talks and terror cannot go hand in hand, Abdullah argued that engagement is essential to address longstanding disputes and foster regional stability.
Abdullah's statement adds to a growing chorus of voices from various political quarters urging a resumption of dialogue. It remains to be seen whether the central government will respond to these calls.
