Chennai police arrest man from Tripura on heroin possession charges

The Zam Bazaar police in Chennai arrested a 23-year-old man from Tripura on Saturday on charges of possessing and distributing heroin. The arrest took place at a private lodge on Medavakkam Main Road in Nanmangalam, following a tip-off received by the police.

The accused has been identified as K. Hiday Hussain. According to the police, Hussain was involved in the possession and distribution of narcotics in pill form and was staying at the lodge. A police team raided the premises and seized heroin packets and pills from his possession.

The police then produced Hussain before a judicial magistrate, who remanded him to judicial custody. The investigation is ongoing.

This arrest comes a little over a week after the anti-narcotics investigation unit arrested a migrant worker from Assam and seized 29 kg of ganja from a lodge on July 18. While both incidents involve narcotics and lodges in the same area, the police have not indicated any direct link between the two cases.

Drug possession and trafficking are serious offences under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. Conviction can lead to rigorous imprisonment and fines. The police have urged the public to share any information about drug-related activities in their neighbourhoods.

The accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, as per the principles of justice and the Indian constitution.
