Lal Bagh murder: Two arrested after 550-km police chase across two states
Two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of a 26-year-old man in Lal Bagh, Delhi, following a manhunt that spanned over 550 kilometres across Delhi and Uttarakhand, the police said on Sunday.
The accused, identified as Aman alias Mulla, 26, and Anuj alias Moni, 20, were intercepted near the Chappar toll plaza in Uttarakhand while travelling in a rented car. Their arrest came after a dedicated police team tracked their movements using a combination of technical surveillance and field intelligence.
According to the police, they received calls about a stabbing and firing incident in Lal Bagh at around 11:30 p.m. on August 12. The victim was rushed to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. A medical examination revealed gunshot wounds with entry and exit points in the abdomen and back, as well as a stab injury on his back.
An eyewitness told the police that he and the victim had gone to a nearby shop when they encountered Aman, allegedly a member of the Sahib Salmani Brother Gang, and another man. An altercation broke out, and the two men allegedly threatened them before leaving. The accused later returned when the duo was on their way back, fired at them, and stabbed the victim. The eyewitness managed to escape, the police said.
A case was registered, and a dedicated team was formed to trace the accused. During the investigation, Anuj also emerged as a suspect. He was already wanted in connection with another murder case registered at the Jahangirpuri police station, the police added.
Intelligence inputs initially suggested that the accused had moved towards Haridwar, but they kept changing their locations to evade capture. Officers correlated technical inputs with ground-level intelligence and tracked their movement. The team finally intercepted them near the Chappar toll plaza, covering a distance of approximately 550 kilometres during the operation.
The police said Aman, a resident of Lal Bagh, has six criminal cases registered against him, while Anuj has been involved in 15 cases. Both are being questioned, and further legal proceedings are underway.
This arrest highlights the coordinated efforts of the Delhi Police in tracing suspects across state borders. The use of technical surveillance, combined with on-ground intelligence, proved crucial in nabbing the accused before they could evade the law further.
