New Delhi Removes Encroachments Outside Pakistan High Commission
Officials in New Delhi on Thursday demolished a section of structures located outside the Pakistan High Commission, stating that they were found to be beyond the mission's approved boundary. The action was carried out by the concerned agencies using a JCB machine, which cleared the structures and barricades along the lane outside the compound, including queue-management installations near the visa section.
The demolition targeted the external security perimeter that had been set up around the diplomatic compound, removing traffic bollards and barricades that previously ring-fenced the area. Visuals from the site showed a trail of rubble, broken metal railings and gates, twisted metal frames, and chunks of concrete strewn across the paved area. Sections of the outer structures, including corrugated roofing and white metal fencing, were completely pulled down. The facade around the service windows appeared damaged, with portions of plaster and masonry broken away.
The main entrance of the Pakistan High Commission, with its white walls, domed features, and large metal gates bearing the Pakistani emblem, remained intact. Barbed-wire fencing was visible along portions of the compound's perimeter.
The action comes exactly three days after Pakistani authorities reportedly removed protective security barricades stationed outside the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. However, there is no official word yet on whether the move in New Delhi was linked to that earlier action.
Separately, on Wednesday, Pakistan raised an issue with the United States over Indian Ambassador to the US Sergio Gor's remarks on Kashmir. During a visit to Srinagar, Gor had called Jammu and Kashmir "an important part of India" and praised the security situation in the Valley. The comments drew a protest from Pakistan, which summoned US Charge d'Affaires Natalie Baker in Islamabad. Officials have not indicated any connection between the demolition and Pakistan's reaction to Gor's remarks.
The removal of encroachments outside diplomatic missions is carried out in accordance with local regulations and international norms governing the upkeep of areas around embassies and high commissions. The exact scope of the approved boundary for the Pakistan High Commission has not been publicly detailed, but the action was described as an administrative measure to address unauthorized structures.
No injuries were reported, and the demolition was completed without incident. The area around the high commission remains under security watch, and the mission's core functions are unaffected.
