Tragedy in Siddipet: Family of four drowns as car plunges into well
In a tragic incident on Wednesday night, a couple and their two young children died after their car veered off the road and plunged into a 20-foot-deep well in Appanapalle village, Dubbak mandal, Siddipet district. The family was returning to their village after attending a memorial service.
The deceased have been identified as Dandugula Raju, 30, his wife Bhagya, 25, their four-year-old son Nihansh, and two-year-old daughter Sanvika. All were residents of Balvanthapur village in Dubbak.
According to police, the accident occurred between 8.30 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Wednesday. One child was reportedly sitting on the driver's lap and the other on the mother's lap when the Swift Dzire car, bearing registration number TS 02 ES 7997, suddenly went into the well. Police are investigating the exact cause, but preliminary suspicions include the possibility that a child pulled the steering wheel or that an animal suddenly crossed the path.
Upon receiving information, police reached the spot and initiated rescue efforts. The operation proved challenging, and firefighters were summoned. Using an earthmover, the bodies were recovered from the well, which is situated on a four-acre parcel of land. The bodies were later shifted to the government hospital in Dubbak for post-mortem examination.
A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police said efforts are underway to ascertain the precise cause of the accident.
This tragic incident highlights the dangers posed by open wells in rural areas, especially on unguarded private lands. It also raises concerns about child safety in vehicles, particularly the practice of allowing children to sit on adults' laps while driving, which is both unsafe and illegal under motor vehicle rules.
Road accident statistics in India have consistently shown that lapses in safety measures, including improper child restraint, contribute to fatalities. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, a significant number of accidents involve children not being secured in appropriate car seats.
Local residents expressed grief over the incident and demanded that such open wells be covered or fenced to prevent future tragedies. Authorities have been urged to conduct a survey of open wells in the district and take necessary safety measures.
The family's relatives and villagers gathered at the hospital, mourning the loss of four lives in a single accident. The village has been left in shock, with many calling for better road safety awareness and infrastructure improvements in the area.
The investigation is ongoing, and the police have recorded statements from witnesses and family members. A detailed report will be submitted to the district administration for further action.
