Nagaland Rains Wash Away Bridge, Block Roads, Bury Paddy Fields

Heavy monsoon rains in Nagaland have caused widespread disruption, washing away a temporary bridge, triggering mudslides, and blocking key roads. Authorities have issued traffic advisories for affected areas, while farmers in Phek district have suffered crop damage.

In Dimapur district, the Commissioner of Police issued a traffic advisory on Wednesday after a temporary bridge between Jharnapani and Molvom was washed away due to incessant rainfall and flooding. The bridge's collapse disrupted connectivity between Chumoukedima and Peren district, two important administrative and commercial hubs. To ease travel, light motor vehicles moving between the two districts have been advised to take a detour via 7th Mile Junction in Chumoukedima, passing through Shokhuvi Village before reaching Pimla Village. The advisory did not specify when the bridge would be restored.

In the neighbouring Phek district, continuous monsoon rain triggered a massive mudslide along National Highway-29. The mudslide originated from a hillside below the highway and sent tonnes of earth and debris cascading onto paddy fields at Mesulumi village. It buried vast stretches of agricultural land, destroyed standing paddy crops, and made the soil difficult to cultivate. While no casualties have been reported, the damage represents a severe setback for farmers who depend on this season's harvest. With paddy at a crucial growth stage, the loss could have a lasting impact on local livelihoods.

Adding to the region's infrastructure woes, a key road connecting Phek district headquarters with Pfutsero and Kohima was blocked on Wednesday. The affected stretch, between Losami and Phek Village on the Pfutsero-Phek via Sakraba road, was rendered impassable after heavy rain caused flooding and clogged a culvert near Phek Village. Traffic movement on this route was thrown into disarray, affecting commuters and transporters alike.

The blockade has sparked fresh criticism over the transfer of the highway's maintenance from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) to the Nagaland Public Works Department (PWD). The move, which was part of administrative reorganisation, has been questioned by locals and civil society groups who feel the PWD is not adequately equipped to handle monsoon-related road damage. Officials from the PWD have not yet commented on the situation.

The affected areas rely heavily on road connectivity for transport of goods and movement of people. The disruption comes at a time when the region is already grappling with seasonal challenges, including landslides and waterlogging. The loss of paddy fields at Mesulumi village is particularly concerning, as agriculture is a primary livelihood for many families in Phek district.

These incidents underscore the fragility of Nagaland's road infrastructure during the monsoon season, when heavy rainfall routinely tests the resilience of public works. Residents and commuters have been advised to plan journeys carefully and heed official warnings.
