Mumbai's 850-Acre Slum Redevelopment Plan Targets 127,000 Homes

The Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) has submitted proposals to the Maharashtra government's high-powered committee for the redevelopment of three large slum clusters covering over 850 acres in Mumbai. These projects are part of the state's Slum Cluster Area Redevelopment Scheme, which aims to make the city slum-free by 2050.

The three plots include Antop Hill in Wadala (450 acres, approximately 65,000 slum homes), Majaswadi in Jogeshwari East (260 acres, around 50,000 homes), and Behrambaug in Bandra East (140 acres, 12,000 homes). Together, these clusters house an estimated 127,000 families.

Under the cluster redevelopment model, eligible slum dwellers will receive free rehabilitation homes, while developers will be selected based on the highest land premium offered to the SRA. In return, developers will be allowed to build and sell commercial or residential components on the remaining land.

This follows the recent redevelopment of the 101-acre Juhu Galli plot. The SRA says these projects are crucial to addressing Mumbai's housing shortage and improving living conditions for slum residents. The high-powered committee is expected to review the proposals and invite bids soon.
