Mullaperiyar Dam Water Level at 112.90 Feet, Well Within Safe Limits

The water level in the Mullaperiyar dam stood at 112.90 feet on Wednesday, with an inflow of 183 cubic feet per second (cusecs) and a discharge of 356 cusecs, according to official data. The maximum permissible storage level for the dam is 142 feet, indicating that the current level is well within safe parameters.

Meanwhile, the Vaigai dam recorded a water level of 30.74 feet, against a maximum capacity of 71 feet. Inflow into the Vaigai dam was measured at 237 cusecs, while discharge stood at 86 cusecs. The combined storage in the Periyar credit was 1,708.98 million cubic feet (mcft).

The Mullaperiyar dam, located in the Idukki district of Kerala but operated by Tamil Nadu under a lease agreement, is a crucial source of irrigation and drinking water for several districts in Tamil Nadu. The dam's water level is closely monitored, especially during the monsoon season, to ensure safety and proper management of water resources.

Despite occasional disputes between the two states over the dam's safety and storage limits, the current readings suggest no immediate cause for concern. The dam has been operating within its designated parameters, with authorities maintaining regular surveillance and maintenance protocols.

The water levels in both dams are essential for meeting the agricultural and domestic needs of the region. The data released by the Tamil Nadu Public Works Department provides transparency and allows stakeholders to plan water usage effectively.
