Meta tests smart glasses with always-on monitoring feature: Report
Meta Platforms is reportedly developing a new prototype of smart glasses that can continuously monitor the wearer's surroundings, according to a report from the Financial Times. The glasses are said to feature an always-on 'super sensing' mode that captures audio and takes frequent photos of the environment.
The prototype glasses would snap images every few seconds and continuously listen to ambient sounds, allowing Meta's AI assistant to later answer questions based on what the user has seen and heard throughout the day. This functionality aligns with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's vision of AI-powered wearables acting as personal assistants to help users remember information and complete everyday tasks.
The report highlights that the technology is still in the experimental stage, and it remains unclear when or if such a product will be released to consumers. Privacy experts have raised concerns about the potential for constant surveillance, though Meta has not commented on how it would address these issues.
Meta has previously released smart glasses in collaboration with Ray-Ban, but those devices lacked the continuous monitoring capability described in the latest report. The new prototype represents an advancement in wearable AI technology, but also raises questions about data collection and user consent.
