Andhra Pradesh's AI-driven GST model draws national interest, claims tax chief
Andhra Pradesh's Artificial Intelligence-led Goods and Services Tax (GST) administration model received appreciation at the 6th National Co-ordination Meeting held at Vigyan Bhawan on Friday, according to Chief Commissioner of State Tax Babu A. The official made the claim in a press release, stating that the state has developed an AI and Machine Learning-based system covering the entire tax administration process.
The system reportedly integrates multiple data sources, automated analytical reports, and a risk matrix to identify cases requiring scrutiny. It spans case selection, return scrutiny, audit, inspection, and litigation. Babu A claimed that the Legal-AI Officer Assistant, trained on GST laws and around 22,000 judicial judgments, is being used to assist officers in handling litigation across various forums. Over 13,700 cases have been brought under the AI-assisted system, he said.
The Chief Commissioner further claimed that six months of AI-driven return scrutiny led to revenue detection of ₹743.43 crore, compared to ₹365.75 crore under the earlier manual process. He added that several states, including Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Assam, and Meghalaya, have shown interest in studying and replicating the Andhra Pradesh model.
These figures and claims are attributed to the official and have not been independently verified by this publication. The development comes amid broader efforts by various state governments to leverage artificial intelligence in governance and tax administration. The GST Council and state authorities have been exploring data-driven methods to improve compliance and revenue collection while reducing manual intervention.
The 6th National Co-ordination Meeting is a platform for state and central tax officials to share best practices and discuss operational challenges under the GST regime. The interest from other states in Andhra Pradesh's model suggests a potential shift toward more technology-oriented tax enforcement mechanisms across the country.
