Manipur CM at Slain MLA's Funeral: 'I Often Think I Could Have Prevented It'
Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh attended the funeral of three-time Zomi MLA Vungzagin Valte on Saturday, expressing deep regret over the 2023 mob attack that led to Valte's death. Singh, arriving by helicopter in Churachandpur, made his first visit to the Kuki-Zo majority area since ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities began in May 2023.
Valte, a former minister and advisor to ex-chief minister N Biren Singh, succumbed to injuries from the May 4, 2023 attack. He had multiple fractures and was on ventilator support before dying at a Gurgaon hospital on February 21. No arrests have been made in the case, with the Zomi Council demanding a central agency investigation.
Addressing the gathering, Singh said Valte was a dear friend and that the evening of the attack remains one of the greatest regrets of his life. 'I often think if I had been there with him, perhaps the unfortunate incident might not have happened,' he said. Singh recalled their last meeting on May 4, 2023, when legislators discussed controlling the situation. He left for his meal, while Valte stayed behind.
The chief minister's visit occurred despite opposition from some Kuki-Zo groups, including the Kuki Inpi Manipur and Kuki Students' Organisation. The Zomi Council initially delayed Valte's funeral, preserving his body at Churachandpur Medical College morgue, but later agreed to the rites due to his wife's health concerns.
Singh assured Valte's family of continued support. The Zomi Council continues to demand a separate administrative structure for Zo groups, distinct from the state government.
