Maharashtra Rain Toll Reaches 13 Amid Widespread Disruption; IMD Issues Alerts
Heavy monsoon rains across Maharashtra have led to at least 13 deaths and widespread disruption in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Pune, Nashik, and the Konkan region over the past 24 hours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for several districts, including Mumbai, Kolhapur, Satara, Sindhudurg, and Ratnagiri, forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall. Earlier, a Red Alert was in place for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Pune, and the Ghats of Nashik, warning of very heavy rainfall and strong winds.
Of the 13 fatalities, eight were caused by wall collapses—six in Mumbai's suburbs, one in Pune, and one in Thane. One person died after a tree fell in Mumbai's suburban area. Additionally, six people were killed when a portion of a three-storey chawl collapsed in Mumbai's Mankhurd area; the building had been declared dangerous, and residents were in the process of evacuating. The State Emergency Control Room reported that nearly 100 houses have been damaged, and hundreds of families have been moved to safer locations.
In Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has deployed its disaster management teams on a war footing, with special units at vulnerable locations to respond to emergencies such as tree collapses, short circuits, and structural collapses. The BMC has also called a Special General Body Meeting on July 9 to discuss the rain-related challenges. As a precaution, all schools and colleges in Mumbai remain closed on Tuesday.
Transport services have been severely affected, with roads submerged, train services delayed, and the Pune-Mumbai Expressway Link Road—reopened after a landslide—now operational. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has appealed to citizens to remain cautious, particularly after the IMD warned of a possible cloudburst event in the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar region. Authorities have advised work-from-home arrangements for offices and urged residents to avoid non-essential travel.
The IMD's Orange Alert indicates the likelihood of continued heavy rainfall, with potential for waterlogging and landslides. The state government has deployed disaster relief forces for rescue and preparedness. Citizens are advised to stay updated with official warnings and follow safety guidelines.
